How to make a texture changer HUD for Second Life
A texture changer HUD is a panel of buttons on the customer's screen. Each button tells a script in the garment to put a texture or material on one of its faces.
What you need
- Your product with well-planned material faces
- The textures or PBR materials for every option
- A HUD system or the will to script one in LSL
Steps
- Plan faces and options. Decide which faces change and which colour sets you offer.
- Upload the textures. Upload every option and keep them full-permission for yourself.
- Choose a system. Write the scripts yourself in LSL, or use a ready system. Our SL Designers Material HUD is a full texture changer system with PBR and Blinn-Phong support and a switch between them.
- Set up the receiver. A script in the garment listens for the HUD and applies textures to the named faces.
- Build the HUD. Make the button panel, give each button its picture, and enter which textures it applies.
- Lock it down and pack. Set permissions so textures cannot be taken, and put the HUD in the product box.
Tips
- Texture keys in a script are safer than textures sitting in the object's contents.
- Offer fewer, better colours: every option is textures the customer's viewer may have to load.
- Test the HUD with a second avatar that owns nothing of yours.
