How to set permissions on Second Life products
Every item in Second Life carries three permissions for its next owner: copy, modify and transfer. Setting them wrongly either annoys customers or gives your work away.
What you need
- Your finished product in your inventory
- A second avatar for testing
Steps
- Know the usual choice. Most clothing is sold copy / modify / no-transfer, or copy / no-modify / no-transfer. Gifts and limited items are no-copy / transfer.
- Set them on the object. Right-click the item in inventory > Properties and set the Next owner boxes.
- Set them on the contents. Scripts, textures and notecards inside have their own permissions. The most restrictive one wins for the whole item.
- Scripts. Make scripts no-modify, so their source cannot be read.
- Textures. Never leave full-permission textures inside a product you sell.
- Test as a customer. Give the product to your second avatar and check what it can and cannot do.
Tips
- Permissions apply at the moment of transfer: set them before boxing.
- Full-perm kits you buy come with licence rules about how you must set permissions on what you make from them.
- Write the permissions in your listing; customers look for them.
